A House For Andrei Tarkovsky

Suburbia | 2003

Sponsored by ICARCH, this competition asked entrants to propose a dwelling for Andrei Tarkovsky, the Russian master of film. Our design focused on the nature of film as a reflective medium, as an experience that is able to remove us from the subjectivity of our own lives and allow us to focus on the context of the film and emerge with a new perspective. In this way, film is like prayer, a medium between us and the world that changes us.

The house is sited on the edge of the woods in a suburban area. At the center of the home is a film chamber, with projection from a projector in the garden and a generous aperture to the sky. The house is clearly divided into private and public zones.
