Atlantic City Holocaust Memorial

Atlantic City, NJ | 2010

with David Cole Assoc AIA

In collaboration with David Cole, we entered a competition for the Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial. How does one approach the design of a Holocaust Memorial located on a boardwalk, surrounded by intense pedestrian activity and entertainment? The design is a simple platform extension of the boardwalk, with a pillar shaped structure serving as access to a terrace level and a beacon of light. A sculptural screen supports vegetation and wraps the memorial to bring life to the structure. To escape the activity of the boardwalk, the terrace level is high above the boardwalk with quiet views of the ocean. Here, a visitor can enjoy a peaceful space for contemplation.
