Prospect Porch

Raleigh, NC | 2009 | 300 sf

with David Cole Assoc AIA

In order to enjoy the beautiful view down their wooded, sloped back yard to a chicken coop, Monika and James needed a screened porch on which they could read, enjoy a meal, or take a nap. In collaboration with David Cole, we designed a spacious porch, perpendicular to the existing ranch house. The ceiling height rises to fifteen feet, and the sloped roof - opposite the slope of the yard - provides maximum views of the surrounding trees and a large surface for rainwater collection. Two cisterns were incorporated into the design so that reclaimed water could be used to water the lush landscaping on the property. The design was simple enough for Monika and James to build it themselves!
