The Corbett Residence was awarded a Merit Award at last night's AIA Triangle Design Awards, presented by Jury Chair Julie Snow of Snow Kreilich Architects. Congratulations to the other award recipients, Perkins + Will, EwingCole, Smith Sinnett Architecture, and Weinstein Friedlein Architects, who won an Honor Award for their incredible Camp Graham project in Henderson, NC. And, thanks to Richard Leo Johnson for capturing the image of our work so well!

Fault House

Work has resumed on the Fault House in northwest Raleigh. We are happy to be underway again after a brief hiatus and are plowing into design development. The house is designed for a wooded suburban site just inside the belt line off Ridge Road. From the street, the property seems common. However, once you walk into the trees, you are confronted with a ninety foot deep ravine beneath a canopy of beech trees - a literal fault in the land. The house is sited so that primary spaces crowd the ravine edge. Construction should begin this summer. Stay tuned!

Erin's Travels

April was a busy AIA month for Erin! AIA South Carolina was kind enough to host her for their annual design conference in Charleston, featuring talks by Paul Mankins, FAIAAnne Marie Decker, AIA, and James Cutler, FAIA, to name a few. Another highlight of the trip was lunch with a long time friend/structural engineer/photographer extraordinaire, John Moore, of 4SE Engineering in Charleston. Erin also attended the AIA Conference on Architecture (A’17) in Orlando. Among several outstanding keynote speakers, the conversation with former First Lady Michelle Obama and AIA National President Tom Vonier, FAIA most certainly rose to the top! Looking forward to A’18 next year in New York!

Book of the Month

Our April book of the month is El Croquis 188, featuring the work of Tham and Videgård. We have long been enamored with the firm's work, captured by the clarity, simplicity, practicality, and situational beauty of their projects. We have also always appreciated that firm principals prefer building to theory and reality to paper architecture. Take a deep dive into this one - it's worth the investment.
