February 2018

in situ studio had a crazy month, check out what's new below!

2018 Young Architects Award

Each year, the American Institute of Architects selects a group of practitioners with less than 10 years of licensure "who have shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession early in their careers." Erin is one of 18 architects in the US being honored this June at the National AIA Convention in New York City with the 2018 Young Architects Award! We are excited that the rest of the country now knows what we have known all along. Erin continues to reinvent the mold for what it means to be an architect, advocate, and authority for good design. The office can't wait to travel to New York this summer to celebrate her - congrats Erin!

Fault House

Construction is about to start on a new house in west Raleigh overlooking a wooded valley just south of the Beltline. The house, which is a simple form from the exterior, is sliced diagonally in plan to separate the guest and master suites, with living areas that lead to views of the forest floor beyond. A large cantilevered deck floats off of the back of the house providing access to the adjacent tree canopies. It will be built by Bob Aiello, who has built several of our houses - stay tuned!

Public Projects on the Boards

We are thrilled to be working on several public projects, each of which will accommodate thousands of visitors every year. We’ve just finalized our contract for the Eno River State Park Visitor Center and will start design work next month. We’ve nearly completed the master planning and pricing phase for Blue Jay Point County Park in northern Wake County. We are also underway designing the Park Visitor Center for the North Carolina Museum of Art, having already completed a master plan for the Visitor Center and a future Event Building. Finally, we are working with the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, designing two new classroom buildings to complement the initial project we completed in 2015. Stay tuned for updates on these exciting projects!

Raleigh Little Theater

Renovation of the Gaddy-Goodwin Teaching Theatre Lobby is nearly complete, just in time for their first show of the season in the new space! While much of the theater was preserved, there were three primary goals with the redesign - (1) make the space accessible for all, (2) update finishes in the space, and (3) create a better connection to the back patio as well as a better visual connection to the rose garden. We are excited to celebrate the new space and recognize the original design by the late Brian Shawcroft at a rededication ceremony this weekend. The first show in the new space is Beanstalk! The Musical! opening on March 16th!

Urban Design Conference

We are proud and excited to be sponsors of the 15th Annual Urban Design Conference which will be held on Thursday, March 15th.  The conference is put on each year by NC State College of Design in partnership with The City of Raleigh. Keynote speakers include amazing landscape architects, architects, and planners who are intimately familiar with our urban areas and the topic of the year: Urban Disruption and the Equity Challenge. It’s not too late to register, so we hope to see you there!
